Well Played Akimbo

Emma Watson. Turning it out on the cover of Interview Magazine.
Working hard in that new Harry Potter movie.

Wearing a red lip and Chanel:

Still relevant nine years into her career and developing beautifully! Work.

Always Tilda Akimbo

AnA loves our random fabulous nights out on the town! First, we hoofed it to the Universal Pictures private theater for an advanced screening of Jim Jarmusch's upcoming film "Limits of Control." Godard and French New Wave references aside, most of the movie can be summarized with this screenshot of Tilda Swinton, who wins it all with wig, bang, and most importantly, cheekbones:

Then, AnA couldn't pass up Posh Bar's ninth birthday party; we're neither sushi fans nor Hells Kitchen regulars, but our girl DJ Cazwell made it fun with some hot disco beats and unexplained trays of fish. Congrats to the bar! We looked for Cazwell collaborator and Drag Race winner Bebe Zahara Benet, but no sight of the leopard clad belle. See you tomorrow night at the Tribeca Skyline party!

Smack My Bitch Up Akimbo

Obsessed killed at the box office and took in what movie "experts" called a "surprising" opening amount by slapping down over $28 million in ticket sales. Why so popular? Maybe it was the weaves, the fighting and the hair pulling? Oh, and executive producer/star Beyonce. Anyway, AnA LOVED the movie. Give her an Oscar!

Dear Drew Akimbo

Oh hi! Grey Gardens premieres this Saturday on HBO! That is, if you're not too plastered by 8pm to watch the biggest fashion event so far this year (WE'D NEVER DEFY YOU ANNA). Lady Barrymore hit the red carpet premiere the other night in a nude flapper-esque ensemble complete with netting headpiece. Here's one view:

Here's another look; the dress is Alberta Ferretti with diamonds by Fred Leighton.

Flesh colored, yes, but AnA approves the timeless gown and fur. Keep it up, Drew, we love you done up all Kennedy style. Seriously though, AnA hopes the film lives up to the legendary and hilarious documentary.

Cinematically Cinched...at the Waist

Unzipped (1995)
Directed by Douglas Keeve

Oh the mid-90s. Colors were bold, supermodels were bolder, the economy was booming, and one of AnA's patron saints, Isaac Mizrahi, was on top of the world. Following his electric neon, critically-acclaimed 1994 Fall line, Miz released Unzipped, which chronicled the line's creation and execution. And girl shined in it.

The queen takes a bow.

This was for many the first glimpse at Mizrahi's dynamic, divisive personality (I mean, really, Johanssen get over it) as well as a look at the day's top Supers at their whiny best--after watching this, it's impossible not to want to slap Linda Evangelista.

Everyone who was anyone in fashion at the time is in this movie, which alone makes it essential viewing for any self-proclaimed fashionista. But more importantly, the doc details the rigors and pressures involved in putting on a high fashion runway show: meeting with editors, coddling temperamental models and having to scrap your Eskimo fantasies after realizing Gaultier has already been there and done that.

Fashion is a dog eat (then purge, natch) dog world and Isaac was one of its casualties in 1998 when he had to close his line after his backers backed the fuck out. But like all divas, she rebounded and pioneered the current high-low trend that has the financially strapped but sartorially-forward jumping in their Matthew Williamson for H&M peacock mini.

But for now, let's electric slide back to 94 and revel in the madness:

Spike Akimbo // Where The Wild Things Are!

Spike Jones the director has given us much in life. First there was Cameron Diaz's hair and style in Being John Malkovich:
Then in Adaptation he showed us Meryl Streep's boobs and also Nicolas Cage(s) at his depressed best:

Now Spike's long awaited film Where The Wild Things Are looks amazing; here is the trailer. Get excited!

Birthday Akimbo: Ms. Ross

It was on this day, 65 years ago (though she's as old as time itself, natch) that the messiah returned in the form of a Black, lanky, doe-eyed, slightly insane chanteuse and mega-bitch known to the world as Diana Ross. For the original dreamgirl and AnA's premiere Icon of the Week, what better way is there to celebrate than with this over-the-top montage from her Citizen Kane, 1976's Mahogany:

Obviously robbed of a Best Actress Oscar nomination, no? Happy Birthday, Motha!

Valentino Akimbo // The Last Emperor Opens

The Valentino documentary opens today in New York at Film Forum.

Not sure about the poster -- slightly creepy. But Valentino red never looks bad. And the movie has been described as "escapist," an AnA approved adjective. Here's a screencap from the film.

Valentino surrounded entirely by bitches! Not sure if this will be as astounding and entertaining as the Lagerfeld docu-masterpiece, but that won't stop us from getting tickets and sneaking in cans of diet soda into the theater!

Chinese Vogue // Olivia Newton-Du Juan

Here is a nice editorial from Chinese Vogue, a great compliment to the Conde Nast family. Great photographers and stylists in addition to the punch of using fabulously diverse models (like former Miss China, Du Juan) make this magazine the one that we want:

Look at Du Juan standing around in some carefully styled natural lighting in what reminds me of the location of that car chase in Grease:

Both the movie and the spread have in common clothes with pumped shoulders, tight pants, exaggerated shapes with emphasis on the hip, and lots of black. Coincidence?
Judging by the high level of "Fierce" in both, I'd say not.
