40s Akimbo // Elie Saab

In regards to all the tough-girl talk in fashion right now, let's examine a surprise AnA favorite from Fall 2009: Elie Saab, who found a restrained voice this time around with a pleasant slew of 1940s day dresses, smart black dresses, hot uni-shoulders and red lips and Kate Winslet Oscar hair. It's strong like Rosie the Riveter without the Rosie O'Donnell mess.

Saab has found a muted palette that unlike the over-somber attitude of other designers doesn't weigh us down. The blue still has an aquamarine kick. And the graphic numbers are an exciting direction even if the below the knee looks a tad matronly.
